5 Lessons in Social Job Searching from Social Sales Experts

5 Lessons in Social Job Searching from Social Sales Experts5 Lessons in Social Job Searching from Social Sales Experts2What do job searchers like you have in common with sales professionals? Youre selling something yourself, which means social job searching is a huge skill to possess. And just like modern sales teams, youre no longer selling yourself just in emails and cover letters or in-person meetings and interviews. Consumers are now researching buying decisions online, and likewise, 93 percent of recruiters now screen candidates on social media. But using social media to sell yourself goes far beyond simply creating a professional brand online and building connections on LinkedIn, according to Join the Social Sales Revolution, the newesteBook from collaboration software and services provider PGi.Here are five lessons from the eBooks top social sales experts to drive your social job searching platformDevelop your professional brand with thought leadership.Heres the catch-22 of sell ing yourself online everyones there. Recruiters are on social media, which means your competition is, too. So to stand out, you need to create thought leadership that keeps your personal brand fresh and in front of eyes. Thought leadership can take a lot of forms- personal and guest blog posts, SlideShare presentations, short Vimeo videos- or it can be as simple as sharing the best curated news on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.Leverage the right tools to manage relationships.Sales teams are finally starting to realize the true relationship-building value of CRM tools, and job seekers can follow suit, too. Because online job seekers come across so many contacts- recruiters, influencers, connectors- its difficult to quickly remember every job title, conversation, or note when you need it. Start collecting all of this information in an old-fashioned spreadsheet or personal relationship management tool, and install an extension like Discover.ly to instantly unearth social connections .Dont search for jobs in a silo.Even the lone wolf sales professional is starting to embrace collaboration and teamwork, and you should, too. Your online network is a valuable asset for introductions to warm leads, job referrals, insights into company cultures, and even motivation and job advice. But to expand that network, you also must participate in online communities share and create content, start group discussions and like or comment on others content.Put a voice to your social profiles with video.Conveying authenticity and earning trust from behind a screen is the next big obstacle for anyone selling online. So modern sales professionals use video to foster trust and educate buyers. Job seekers, take note. Professional, strategic thought leadership videos or video resumes could be your ticket to landing interviews. In fact, a 2015 study shows that job candidates appear more anspruchsvoll and thoughtful when evaluators hear their voices instead of just reading their pitches.Be brave enough to try something new.Someone out there had to be the first salesperson to close a deal thanks to a Tweet, Top Sales World CEO Jonathan Farrington said in PGis eBook. And someone had to be the first job seeker to target employers with social ads, conduct real-time job searches on Twitter, post a creative video resume online, or use Pinterest as a visual resume. Archimedes

Archimedes Archimedes ArchimedesOne of the greatest minds of classical antiquity, Archimedes (c. 287 BCE c. 212 BCE) was a scholastic triple-threat who made astonishingly original contributions to mathematics, physics, and engineering. His c.v. includes some three dozen new tools and weapons systems as well as a pioneering role in plane and solid geometry. He even gave scientists and engineers their ultimate catch-phrase, EurekaWith all that going for him, Archimedes was no doubt the ancient worlds poster boy for science and technology careers, right? Wrong. His famous inventions brought water to arid lands and held invading Roman armies at bay, but he vocally disdained them. Compared to the conceptual rigors of his favorite academic pastime of geometry, engineering and other pursuits that addressed worldly necessities of living were to him sordid and ignoble. His obsessive interest in mathematical abstractions came at the expense of personal hygiene and earned him a reputation as a ncient Greeces first absent-minded professor. He is most widely known for running naked through the streets of Syracuse. One wonders how the man whose brilliant feats of engineering include the compound pulley and the theory of hydrostatics would fare in todays job market. And so it is with Archimedes. With little in the written record to go on, most attempts to chronicle his life invariably comprise some mix of fable, fact, and fudge factor. Unlike his mathematical work, he left few formal treatises behind describing his inventions. Accounts of his life were written decades after his death, and leave plenty of room for uncertainty about his actual accomplishments and the true nature of his character. His own writings disclose that he was born in Syracuse then a self-governing city-state and the most important seaport on the Greek-controllumineszenzdiode island of Sicily. His father was the astronomer Phidias, which could account for his natural bent toward the sciences and one of hi s primary later inventions, an early planetarium.Archimedes Thoughtful was painted about 1620 by Domenico Fetti in Mantua. Presently, the picture is located in the art museum Alte Meister in Dresden, Germany. He spent formative years in Alexandria, Egypt academic ground-zero during the Hellenic period where he reportedly worked and studied with the successors of the great mathematician Euclid. It was Archimedes passion for geometric abstractions that led to his disdain for engineering. Yet he is said to have invented his most lasting practical device the Archimedes screw while immersed in these lofty concepts in Egypt. Developed initially to irrigate croplands along the Nile delta, his water screw was also used to drain water from underground mines, to water the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and to pump bilge from the pharaohs ships. Today it is standard issue in sewage treatment, irrigation, and other applications where it is vital to move large amounts of water with minimal effort .During Archimedes lifetime, his most famous inventions, and presumably the bulk of his income, came from his friendship with King Hieron II of Syracuse. Hieron marveled at his mastery and frequently put him to the test.On one occasion, the king asked Archimedes how a great weight could be moved by a small force. The inventor proceeded to demonstrate how, with only a series of compound pulleys, he was able to singlehandedly drag a fully loaded three-mast ship out of the harbor and across the beach. The story of his famous bath, the discovery of the principles of hydrostatics, and the ensuing naked run through the streets is not universally believed, but it is indicative of the close connection between the king and his prize engineer.Millennia before weapons of mass destruction, Archimedes used his unique understanding of mass to cause new levels of destruction with devastatingly ingenious weapons created for his king during the Second Punic War. He developed specialized catapults th at hurled blocks of stone and logs at invading ships. He developed the Archimedes claw, a hidden crane with an enormous hook used to raise invading ships out of the water and either flip them upside down or allow them to crash back down into the surf, crashing them to bits. Less certain but no less impressive are the historical accounts of Archimedes use of giant mirrors to incinerate enemy ships with reflected sunlight.Despite having kept the invading Romans at bay for more than three years, eventually the island colonies on Sicily were sacked in 212 BCE. The Roman emperor had specifically asked that Archimedes be brought back alive, but Roman soldiers found him working on a math problem at his desk and tried to seize him. Mistaking his mathematical tools for exotic weapons, a soldier killed Archimedes on the spot.Archimedes true accomplishments may be shrouded in the mists of time, but his genius shines through loud and clear today.Michael MacRae is an independent writer. With litt le in the written record to go on, most attempts to chronicle his life invariably comprise some mix of fable, fact, and fudge factor.

Scratching the Surface of Hydraulic Fracturing

Scratching the Surface of Hydraulic Fracturing Scratching the Surface of Hydraulic Fracturing Although much of the hydraulic fracturing debate focuses on unseen effects below ground, the surface impacts of drilling and ongoing activity are in plain sight. Operators make their own roads to carry heavy equipment to and from the well site. They run pipelines, install water-pumping systems, build power grids, and dig storage ponds for wastewater. Each of unterstellung activities is a potential point of community conflict, and also adds to the wells operating costs. Everyone stands to gain from emerging technologies that increase production efficiency and reduce surface impacts.Accordingly, the U.S. Secretary of Energy Advisory Boards natural gas subcommittee in 2011 recommended 20 measures to help shale gas producers build and keep public support for their surging industry. The subcommittees final report urged wider adoption of technologies that reduce water use, prevent atmospheric emis sions, protect ground water, and minimize disruption of the local environment.Something in the WaterIn a single operation, some 2 1000000 to 10 million gallons of water are injected into the wellbore along with chemicals and abrasives that free oil or gas trapped in shale. Water consumption and wastewater management are two sides of the same controversial coin in unconventional drilling. Energy companies and some environmental groups alike are optimistic about new technologies and best practices that address these issues and maximize production efficiency at the same time.Effective frack lengths Gas Fracturing vs. Water. Image GasFracWater scarcity threatens the industrys ability to profitably drill shale oil or gas wells in a number of potential deposits in dry wildwestfilm states. Buying and transporting water to these fields is costly and the market is competitive. Even in areas of abundant water, researchers say withdrawal for fracking lowers groundwater levels and affects water available to lakes and stream systems.Fracturing fluids combine fresh water with chemical additives and abrasive proppants like sand. Delivered under pressure through the wellbore, the fluid creates fissures in the underground shale formation to free trapped oil and gas. Most of the fracking fluid is absorbed underground, but between 20% and 40% flows back to the surface over several weeks, carrying with it naturally occurring groundwater, minerals, clays, dissolved solids, hydrocarbons, and radioactive materials. U.S. wells generate about 21 million barrels of this flowback every year. There are already identified and accepted best practices that enlightened energy companies should engage in immediately, said energy subcommittee member Prof. Stephen Holditch, head of the Department of Petroleum Engineering at Texas AM University. In fact, most oil and gas operators already follow these best practices or they are developing plans to apply these ideas. The concept of reduced emission completions establishes procedures and tools that minimize the risks and headaches of water management and reduce the likelihood of hazardous emissions or spills that impact local water and air quality.Dry IdeaSo-called waterless fracking is something of a Holy Grail in the shale gas industry. Innovations are available or in the wings that substitute water with gases, gels, or supercritical fluids, often with properties that justify their cost by stimulating more energy production.Canadian company GasFrac (Calgary, AB, Canada) specializes in waterless fracking using liquid petroleum gas. The companys closed-loop set up combines specialized storage tanks, blenders, pumps, and mixing equipment. LPG is fed from tanks into pressurized sand blenders. The result is a gelled LPG-sand fracking slurry. The company claims 90% to 100% of the LPG can be removed from the production stream. The DryFrac approach, developed by Praxair (Danbury, CT), combines sand and liquid carbon dioxide in place of water. Energy companies have long used CO2 to rekindle production from older vertical wells. The DryFrac technique adapts the practice for unconventional extraction. The technology uses the companys CO2 blenders to prepare the mixture, which is injected down the wellbore with high-pressure pumping equipment. The company states that 30% to 50% improvement in anfangsbuchstabe production rates are possible in water-sensitive areas, primarily because CO2 has lower viscosity than water and can create more complex fractures and fracture connectivity. The pressurized CO2 vaporizes, helping to energize the production stream for increased initial recovery of oil or gas.Engineers have reported some success with experimental methods that use CO2 or other liquefied gases. General Electric is looking at chilled supercritical fluid CO2 through its Ecomagination green-energy research program. GEs goal is to reclaim CO2 waste products from coal-fired power plants for use and ultimately re-use in fracking fluids. Researchers at Colorado School of Mines say their cryogenic fracking technique injects -321 degree F liquid nitrogen or CO2 into heated shale formations, where the temperature and pressure differences create bigger fissures that increase production. Liquid nitrogen evaporates underground, eliminating the need to process it as flowback. All these waterless techniques sidestep the problem of saturation that can cause clay formations to swell and block the release of oil or gas.Cleaner CompletionsThe atmospheric emission of methane from unconventional oil and gas production is a contentious issue. In January 2015, tougher new EPA rules took effect to reduce production-related atmospheric releases of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), methane, and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). All told, EPA expects the restrictions to cut 2015 emissions of methane by 1 million tons, of VOC by 190,000 tones, and of HAPS by 12,000 tons. The rule, among other actions, requires the use of reduced emissions completion (REC) practices wherever they are feasible. Until now, operators could choose to vent or flare the gas produced through flowback during the well-completion and testing stage. The new rule allows that practice only in tandem with REC methods. In addition to conflicts when flaring is performed in high fire-risk areas or near residential areas, the practice wastes natural gas and other hydrocarbons that could be sold. REC methods help energy companies cash in on gas that would have been burned off, while leaving less waste material to clean up and dispose of when the jobs done. In the basic REC set-up, flowback from the wellhead is piped through a sand trap to remove most of the particulate content and into a three-phase gas/liquid separator. Marketable gas and condensate (liquid hydrocarbon) are directed either to a dehydrator or directly to the sales line. The remaining fracking fluid flows to open pits or tanks to await processing for discharge or di sposal.Emerging technologies like these and more like them in the wings could make fracturing more attractive, both above ground and at the bottom line.Michael MacRae is an independent writer.Learn more at the ASME Hydraulic Fracturing Conference 2015.
